Stump Grinding vs Stump Removal for Los Angeles Yards

After a tree removal, you are left with a decision: leave the stump, grind it, or dig it out completely. Most Los Angeles homeowners choose grinding, but there are cases where full removal is the right call. Here is how the two differ and how to choose.

What Stump Grinding Does

Stump grinding uses a machine with a carbide-toothed cutting wheel to shred the stump and the top of the root flare into wood chips. A typical residential grind goes 6 to 12 inches below grade. The deeper roots stay in the ground and decompose over several years. The hole is backfilled with the chips or with soil, and you can lay sod, plant shrubs or put down mulch almost immediately.

Best for: lawns, planting beds, turf replacement, pavers set on a sand base, and general cleanup after removal.

Typical cost in LA: $125–$250 for small stumps, $200–$450 for medium, and $400–$800 for large hardwood stumps.

What Full Stump Removal Does

Full stump removal, or excavation, digs out the entire root ball and major roots with an excavator or by hand. It leaves a large hole that must be filled and compacted.

Best for: new foundations, ADU slabs, pool installations, retaining wall footings, and situations where roots must be gone for structural reasons.

Typical cost: significantly more than grinding — often several times the price — because of equipment, labor, haul-off of soil and root mass, and backfill.

Replanting in the Same Spot

If you want a new tree where the old one stood, a standard grind is not enough. Decomposing wood chips steal nitrogen from the soil and create a soft pocket that settles. Ask for a deep grind with the chips removed and replaced with native soil, or plant a few feet to the side of the old stump.

Regrowth: Which Trees Come Back

Some common LA trees fight back after removal. Ficus, Chinese elm, eucalyptus, Brazilian pepper, tree of heaven and some fruit trees can send up suckers from roots left behind. Grinding the stump usually stops most of it, but a few sprouts may appear the first season. Cut them as they appear and they will exhaust the roots. Pines and palms do not resprout from the stump.

Surface Roots and Ficus

Ficus and mature pines often have surface roots running across the lawn or under walkways. A standard stump grind won’t touch those. If they are lifting concrete or creating trip hazards, ask for surface root grinding at the same time. If roots are already inside a sewer lateral, you will need a plumber too.

Utilities and Irrigation
